The Ann Arbor T-shirt Company is composed of dozens of artists, screen printers, art techs, logistics professionals, embroiderers, and support staff, all operating out of Ann Arbor, Michigan (about 40 miles west of Detroit). We give our employees subsidized healthcare, a 401k match, company soccer and kickball teams, catered employee lunches, and quarterly company parties around town. While we believe in treating our employees with respect as a matter of course, it makes business sense, too. So what went into this? Our illustrators and designers create the artwork, art techs convert the art into component screens (which were made of silk in the old days, hence "screen printing" or "silk screening"), and skilled screen printers and their apprentices apply ink through the screens. We use top of the line M&R carousel presses manufactured in Illinois. Our warehouse team checks quality, bags, and boxes the apparel for fulfillment centers across the country.

When you buy one of our shirts, your money is flying all around the country. The percentages vary between products as input prices fluctuate (and a small percent of our catalogue is fully imported), but for the most part, it looks something like this: 35% in Ann Arbor, MI for Design, Printing, & Production; 22% in Seattle, WA for Advertising & Platform Fees; 6% in Cincinnati, OH for Apparel Distribution; 4% in Atlanta, GA for Logistics; 4% in Roselle, IL for Printing Presses & Equipment; 4% in Texas & Southwest US for Cotton Farming; 3% in Toluca, Mexico for Fabric Sewing; and 1% in Pineville, NC for Screen Printing Inks.

Screen printing is like cooking: it's not rocket science, but it's really easy to screw up if you cut corners or use sub-par ingredients. That's why we hire, train, and retain skilled professionals with internal apprentice and educational programs, resulting in screen printing experts who thoroughly understand how ink chemistry, curing heats, and apparel fibers all interplay. We also use top notch QCM inks that are better for the environment, more vibrant, and last longer than the cheap stuff. Lastly, we invest in the best equipment, with screen printing presses and support equipment engineered and manufactured by M&R in Roselle, Illinois, allowing our printers to move faster with less waste and create high quality products at a lower cost.

We proudly design, print, and embroider the majority of our products completely in our Ann Arbor, MI factory. The Ann Arbor T-shirt Company grew from a dorm room project between two friends at the University of Michigan, and our unique approach of providing fair wages, healthcare, 401k matches, and meals to our workers, using U.S. sourced machines, inks, and mostly U.S. cotton, and producing in-house to keep quality up and prices low, is what makes our products stand out. We love giving people fun ways to express themselves and strike up conversations with their neighbors.
